How to Apply Concealer With a Brush Like a Pro Makeup Artist

If you’ve ever browsed through the beauty tools section at Sephora or Ulta, you’ve probably noticed that there are more makeup brushes on the market than even the most dedicated beauty buff could use in her or his lifetime. Fan brushes, eye shadow brushes, concealer brushes — with so many options, it can be a little difficult to determine which tools deserve a spot in your daily beauty routine, or which brushes to use for which job. For full-face foundation application, an easy-to-use tool like the Beautyblender gets it done. But for precision jobs, such as concealing, nothing works quite as well as the trusty makeup brush — as long as you know how to use it, that is. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered. We consulted with makeup artists Carissa Ferreri, Raul Otero, and Vlada Haggerty (yes, that's the Vlada behind @vladamua), to get the scoop on the best ways to apply concealer with a makeup brush, and the best brushes for covering blemishes, dark circles, and more. After all, your makeup only looks as good as the tools you use, and if you ask the experts, there’s nothing better than the right brush.

Concealing Spots and Blemishes

Regardless of age, we all deal with breakouts. In fact, "as many as 50 percent of women will suffer from acne at some point in their adult lives," says Doris Day, a clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center and the author of 100 Questions & Answers About Acne (Jones & Bartlett Learning)

Fortunately, concealing them isn't too tricky as long as you're using the right tools for the job. If the blemish is small, you might be able to get away with skipping the concealer and covering the spot with your favorite foundation. But for tougher jobs, you'll need a few tools at your disposal: Specifically, color-corrector, full-coverage concealer, and a small brush for precision.

Prep With a Color Corrector

Makeup artist Carissa Ferreri, whose résumé includes creating red carpet looks for A-list actresses (such as Priyanka Chropa and Maggie Gyllenhaal) recommends first color-correcting the blemish if necessary (a green corrector neutralizes redness, while peach and yellow tones balance out dark spots and hyperpigmentation). "Apply a very small amount [of color corrector] on a tiny brush and do stipple motions to lightly layer product," says Ferreri, and let it dry before moving on to the next step. For flawless results, try Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Corrector, which is packed with pigments for an airbrushed effect.

Choose an Oil-Free Concealer

After you've color-corrected the blemish, you'll need to apply a layer of concealer to, well, conceal it. Ferreri recommends using a "clean, small brush [to] lightly press an opaque concealer (that matches your skin tone) on top of the corrector." Another trick of the trade? "[It's] best to go little by little, creating thin layers, until the desired color is achieved," Ferreri explains. Choose a high-coverage, long-wear formula, such as the two-time Best of Beauty-winning Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer. The pro-favorite concealer is oil-free, non-comedogenic, and loaded with skin-healing antioxidants (including Vitamin E to help prevent scarring).
