AN EXPERT GUIDE TO TAKING CARE OF YOUR HAIR DURING THE MONSOON
The monsoon season can be pretty harsh on your mane, especially if you are not prepared for it. Due to the increased humidity, your scalp can get extremely oily. As a result, you end up washing your hair more often, robbing it of its natural moisture. All this leads to frizziness, dull hair, dandruff and even hair fall.
Following a proper monsoon hair care regime can help reduce the adverse effects of monsoon on your tresses. And what better way to learn about monsoon hair care than from an expert. We chatted with Pooja Singh, National Creative Director – Hair, Lakme Salon on the best way to care for your mane during the rainy season and here’s what we found out.
What makes rainwater so bad for your hair
Rainwater is acidic in nature and when your hair gets exposed to it, it strips it of its moisture, leaving it rough and frizzy. If you do get wet in the rain, make sure to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and conditioner to remove any kind of debris or impurities from the hair. And do not forget to use a serum or leave-in conditioner to protect your hair from the frizz caused due to the humidity.
The perfect hair care routine for monsoon
There are no seasonal hair woes that can’t be dealt with a proper hair care routine. According to Pooja, here’s what your monsoon hair routine should look like:
Washing - Shampoo your hair regularly to remove any residue or particles from your scalp left behind by rainwater.
Conditioning – Conditioning your hair by applying a masque is important as it controls frizz and smoothes out the hair.
Masking - Rainwater tends to make your hair limp and lifeless. To prevent this, apply a few drops of hair serum or leave-in conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. This forms a layer over the hair shaft, protecting, nourishing and adding shine to your hair
Drying - If you get wet in the rain, make sure to wash your hair immediately and dry it thoroughly, as rainwater is dirty and acidic, and can lead to fungal or bacterial infections. Also never go out with wet hair; either dry your hair with a hairdryer (with medium to low heat) or let it naturally air dry.
Oiling – A good head massage with a moisturising oil will boost blood circulation in the scalp and promote hair growth. It will also moisturise the scalp and hair. However, avoid doing this more than once or twice a week as your scalp is more prone to oiliness during the monsoon.
